Blog From Induction to Immersion: Building Workplace Readiness in Emerging Engineers.

What if your new joiners didn’t just learn your organisation’s values, but experienced what those values look like in action?

The transition from campus to corporate is more than a change of workplace. It is a shift in expectations, communication, responsibility and professional identity. For Graduate Engineer Trainees (GETs), technical knowledge is only one part of the equation. Communicating confidently, navigating workplace relationships and responding constructively to feedback are equally important.

Yet, traditional employee onboarding often focuses on policies, presentations and processes. The real challenge is helping new joiners translate what they learn into everyday workplace behaviour.

From Campus to Corporate: An Experiential Learning Journey

TBH Circle designed an experiential onboarding programme for 120+ Graduate Engineer Trainees at a leading defence manufacturing organisation, built around its seven behavioural competencies.

Across 8 hours over two days, featuring seven simulations, the programme explored a fundamental question: Do new joiners know how to show up professionally?

The onboarding journey covered four key areas:

  • Self-Awareness: Understanding personal triggers, defence mechanisms, coping styles and behavioural responses.
  • Professional Communication: Exploring how listening, tone and non-verbal cues influence workplace interactions.
  • Workplace Professionalism: Developing awareness of workplace etiquette, professional presence, grooming and employability.
  • Expectation Setting: Understanding organisational expectations and bridging the gap between managers and new joiners.

What Made This Corporate Training Different?

Instead of relying solely on presentations, participants engaged in simulations, games, role plays, feedback and reflection.

Each simulation was followed by a structured debrief, helping trainees connect their experiences to real workplace situations and identify specific behaviours to practise on the job.

Because knowing what to say is only half the skill. Knowing how to say it, when to say it and how it affects others is what makes the difference.

The Training Impact

The programme recorded a 96% engagement rate among new joiners, reflecting strong participation throughout the learning experience.

The journey created opportunities for trainees to examine their communication styles, professional presence, behavioural responses and understanding of workplace expectations.

At TBH Circle, we believe effective employee onboarding goes beyond introducing people to an organisation. It helps them practise the behaviours needed to contribute, collaborate and become part of its culture.

Is your onboarding helping new joiners understand your culture, or experience it?

Let’s design an experiential onboarding programme that turns organisational expectations into everyday behaviours.
